Oh, internet. You do not even want to know what my day was like. But, apparently, I'm going to tell you.
A) Day 3 of migraine.
B) Also, stiff neck.
C) DNS was totally effed up in. In completely different ways from last week.
D) We kind of lost a spacecraft. A little. Just the orientation part of it. Was this related to the DNS problem? Why, yes. Yes it was. (I hear the spacecraft is going to be fine, though.)
DNS, in case you aren't a giant nerd, is the thing that takes the name of a computer (say, www.cnn.com) and turns it into a number (157.166.255.18) because computers like numbers. If you give them a name with no number attached, they just flip you the bird. The names are only for the convenience of us human beings, who like words. If DNS gets broken, we keep putting in www.cnn.com, and our computer keeps telling us "WTF!" or more technically "server not found". Either way you're not getting to your website. But if DNS is working, you can put in www.cnn.com, or any other website, and your computer translates it into a number and then goes on its jolly way finding the machine somewhere in the world that matches up with that number. It's a miracle, really.
Why was DNS effed up? Well, that's a complicated question. I know a lot of the answer, but I'm pretty certain you don't want to know. The real reason is that we chose to use the friendly, non-mission DNS, which lets us get to youtube. Non-mission DNS doesn't block any websites. But it also doesn't have delightful 24x7 support, or any kind of service level agreement. This was a lot less real to my boss until today.
So, I spent today on the phone. Because there was not so very much I could do about it other than harass technical people in other places. Can you guess how much I like spending the day on the phone with people who all insist that the problem lies elsewhere?
Anyway, that was today. I'm hoping for no more migraine tomorrow. And no rain. And no DNS problems. And only minor dentistry.

Wool socks and a Ball Gown: So Prince George's
Don't even talk to me. I am so aggravated.
It's been kind of a rough week. The wrong drops in my eye. The upgrade that went poorly. Nasty pain in my neck and back. An extremely irritating and pointless (but thorough!) security investigation. An old cyst that chose to swell up again. Getting on another diet and feeling like a zombie as a result. (You know, I wish I could go back and retroactively not write a couple of "I'm never going on a diet again" posts I've written. That was before I was pre-diabetic and had an effed up back. Before ye olde neurosurgeon told me the best thing I could do for my back was lose weight. Sigh.)
Anyway, that week is done, and good riddance. It's time for the weekend! I started by changing into comfy pants. Oh hell yeah. I'm wearing the frak out of these comfy pants. Sheepskin boots too. If I'm not comfortable now, it's not for lack of trying.
After the switch to extremely comfortable, JD and I drove on over to the local Outback Steakhouse. He thought we'd get there before the rush. Hah! I know my Outback culture. Friday evening rush starts well before I leave work. I'm flexible, though. I told them we'd be happy to sit in the bar, so we got seated pretty much right away. Dinner was *delicious*. A wood fire grilled steak, grilled asparagus, and steamed green beans. You can't beat that with a stick. I mean it. Stay away from my steak with your sticks.
We popped into MOM's (My Organic Market) to get some flax seed and $75 later walked out with sweet potato dog treats, fancy chocolate, probiotics, and several other organically expensive items. It's almost as bad as visiting the store my boss likes to call "Whole Wallet". I seldom get out of there for under $100, though in that case it's almost entirely cheese. They have an excellent cheese counter.
Tomorrow is farriery and riding (do I remember how? does Pluto?) and sig-beer. JD is still disappointed that our long time beer venue has turned hoity toity. They no longer carry onion rings, or in fact most kinds of bar food. They carry risotto balls. Risotto balls! Because beer and fried risotto go together like wool socks and a ball gown. Who thought that was a good idea? At any rate, they still serve beer. So far.
Sunday I plan to go hiking, possibly in the snow. That actually sounds like a good time to me, provided I can be warm and dry afterward.
Also, this weekend, I am PACKING! Because it's almost time for me to go see Cody and Just Blue Skies so we can get our chick hiking on. I miss those women fiercely.

So ready for the weekend
It has been a hell of a week, Internet. Sick horse, sick dog, back went out, all kinds of weird technical problems at work, and today just NOTHING has worked right. For instance, I went to get my hair cut, and the lights went out. And I wasn't even that surprised because it's just been that kind of week. I think Shamika may be good enough to cut by Braille. Actually at that point I think she was done cutting. But the point is my haircut still looks good, which is all Shamika. I try to interfere as little as possible with the creative process. I ask her to get it off my face and otherwise do as she likes. And it always looks nice. Voila.
The dog is feeling a fair amount better, although she definitely goes through rumbly tumbly times still. It's amazing how nauseated an expression a dog can have. As far as I know she hasn't barfed in a while. Though thanks to the steroids she is drinking constantly and therefore peeing in the house. So we're still wiping stuff up. Her steroid dose dropped today. We are hoping for a more just and pee-free environment in the future.
In the morning I'm running out to check on Pluto again (status so far: lymph node is still swollen, solid, tender) but after that JD and I are picking up DeLee. And JD is going to drop us off in the middle of nowhere for some girly hiking time. I can't wait. Hiking with DeLee is one of my favorite things to do. The weather is supposed to be in the 50's, which if you ask me is pretty much perfect hiking weather. And we're supposed to have the biggest full moon in years tomorrow night.
We might have to hike up to the ridge to get the full view, as we're staying in a little valley. But I think it's going to be amazing. And I have a little scotch to help it along, just in case.
I weighed my pack out of curiosity. Base weight for a trip with nighttime temps in the 30's: 18.6 lb. 26 lb with food, water, and fuel. And enough chocolate to share. It's a little bit luxe, maybe. It feels heavy to me but JD says it's either really light or he's gotten really strong. Either way, it doesn't bode well for the weight in the hundred mile wilderness in a few months. The sweating, cursing redhead in the first 40 or so miles? That'll be me.
